What makes the Achterhoek so special
The Achterhoek is not a landscape of sweeping vistas. It is a patchwork landscape: small fields, wooded banks, avenues, raised fields and streams that keep revealing new glimpses. Around Winterswijk, the Winterswijk National Landscape covers almost 22,000 hectares of this countryside. The region also has a rhythm of its own. From the first Sunday of Advent until Epiphany, the midwinter horn sounds here, a tradition that has been on the Dutch list of intangible heritage since 2013. And the name Achterhoek? It was first used by the poet Willem Sluiter. Museum De Scheper in Eibergen keeps regional literature, including works about him.
