If you are looking for a hotel in Groenlo itself, we are not it. De Kastanjefabriek is on the Haaksbergseweg in Eibergen. The Markt in Groenlo is ±12 km away, about a quarter of an hour’s drive. By bike it is ±9 km: allow half an hour, a little less on an e-bike. On the other hand, you park on our own grounds, free of charge, and after dinner you only have to go upstairs, by the stairs or the lift. An afternoon in the fortified town

An afternoon in the fortified town

Groenlo is a fortified town. It was fought over for a long time during the Eighty Years’ War, and you can still see it: in the street pattern of the old town, the moats and the cannons on the ramparts. The story is best heard on the guided historic fortified-town walk. It takes about an hour and a half and passes fortifications, murals and the site of the 1627 siege. From 1 April to 31 October it departs every Thursday at 14:00. You can sign up at the VVV tourist office in Groenlo.

Museum, dungeons and a witch trial

Museum, dungeons and a witch trial

The Oude Calixtuskerk on the Mattelierstraat, a fifteenth-century church, houses the National Museum of the Eighty Years’ War. The museum tells the story of that war from several sides, and the Museumkaart is valid there. For something darker: beneath the town hall lie centuries-old dungeons, open to the public again since 2016. With a film and a lantern-lit tour, you hear about the witch trial of Lange Aele and her daughter in 1613. The tour runs all year round on Wednesdays, and can also be booked through the VVV.

Beer: from Grolle to Lievelde

Beer: from Grolle to Lievelde

In Groenlo, the brewery from which Grolsch grew was founded in 1615. Production has since moved to Boekelo, but the brewing tradition has not left the town. Brouwerij Brouwersnös offers guided tours, has a tasting room and runs a whisper boat for about three quarters of an hour along the old canals. Around 3 km from Groenlo, in Lievelde, lies Erve Kots with a restaurant and the Bierexperience of the Brouwhoes. After a day like that, you drive back to Eibergen, where our restaurant in the old factory serves dinner until 21:00.

The Siege of Grolle in 2027

The Siege of Grolle in 2027

Every two years the siege of 1627 is re-enacted during De Slag om Grolle, a three-day weekend. There is no edition in 2026. The next one runs from 22 to 24 October 2027, exactly four hundred years after the siege. The town will be busy then, so somewhere to sleep a little outside Groenlo is welcome. The Dine & Stay package (one night, breakfast and a three-course dinner) turns such a visit into a complete stay.

Combining Groenlo with the rest of the region

Combining Groenlo with the rest of the region

From Eibergen, Groenlo is as far away as Borculo. Haaksbergen and Neede are even closer, and Winterswijk is about 25 minutes away. That makes Groenlo a good fit for a few days in the Achterhoek from one fixed base. If you visit in autumn, from 19 October 2026 to 17 January 2027 our kitchen serves a game menu of three to six courses.
