Mondrian, the Markt and the Saturday market

Mondrian, the Markt and the Saturday market

Piet Mondrian lived in Winterswijk from 1880 to 1892. His family home on the Zonnebrink is now Villa Mondriaan, a museum showing his early work alongside that of his contemporaries and present-day artists. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 17:00. On the Markt stands the Jacobskerk, with its 64-metre tower. Inside hangs an 18th-century chandelier, a gift from the weavers’ guild. According to recent reports the church was closed for renovation, so check beforehand whether you can go inside. On Saturdays there is a weekly market in the town centre.

A weaving village, just like our building

A weaving village, just like our building

In the early twentieth century, Winterswijk had seven textile factories, including the Tricotfabriek. Its weaving tradition goes back to the Guild of St Michael. Our own building comes from the same world. It was built in 1834 as a cotton weaving mill and around 1900 was the factory of the Prakke family. So you sleep in a piece of the Achterhoek’s textile past, beneath the old roof beams or beside an original factory column. Read the full story in the history of De Kastanjefabriek.

Fossils from the quarry

Fossils from the quarry

Near Ratum lies a limestone quarry that has been in use since 1932. The rock is Muschelkalk from the Triassic, around 240 million years old. Bones of the Nothosaurus have been found there, as well as footprints and trackways of saurians. Since 2016 there have been no open fossil-hunting days and the quarry is not freely accessible. Check the current situation with the quarry itself before you go. Finds from the quarry can be seen at the MuseumFabriek in Winterswijk.
